Kick aside the Cap-Toes and put on 'yer Boppin' Boots, for here's something Luxury gone a little Country and a touch of Rock N' Roll! Another fabulous piece of Los Angeles Menswear History in the shop from World Renown 1**Carroll & Co. of Beverly Hills, California. Irritation was part of its genesis, in the words of his son John Carroll said his father, a former Warner Bros. publicist, "Was fed up with having to drive downtown to Brooks Brothers to buy a suit." Richard Carroll was later encouraged to open his own clothing store because he had always been “an elegant, sartorial kind of guy. He had made a number of Hollywood contacts in his years as a publicist, and that really was the foundation for starting his clothing business.”
Richard ultimately opened up shop in the Golden Triangle of Beverly Hills in 1949, being the first Contemporary Men's Store in Beverly Hill's. Carroll & Co. has dressed a long list of leading men in the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies, including Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Steve McQueen, Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, Rock Hudson, Paul Newman, Jack Lemmon, and Gene Kelly to name a few. The retailer's popularity in Hollywood continued with the launch of a studio division, which has outfitted popular television shows from The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Ray Donovan. The store has continued to offer garments for television and film production even to this day!
    (Cont. History in Notes)
This jacket is a Multi-Striped all lightweight worsted wool with a very fine hand; notch lapel configuration with a 3 button closure, and Jetted Flap Pockets. It is a finely tailored piece and is softly constructed in the Neapolitan (Napoli) tailoring style of Spalla-Camicia (Shirt Sleeve/Shoulder). Thusly, facilitating a wide range of motion and conforming ergonomically to the wearer rather than building form over the wearers silhouette. Though its Grey scale, its appearance comes off as somewhat Green, due to the Yellow solid Striping within the other layers of Grey. A great Spring Summer (evening) piece, or another great year round jacket if you're living in Wine-Country or the like.

    NOTE:
1** The movie industry noticed the carefully crafted and conservative style found not only in Carroll & Co.’s professional clothes but also in the casual attire. Hollywood looked at this and said, ‘That is our look. That is our story.' The Cary Grants and the sweaters and the V-necks. That’s all Carroll. There was no sportswear look coming from anywhere else but his store, and everyone else copied that look. The movies were driving it. John Carroll put it this way: “Anybody that you can think of who has a long history in Hollywood, one way or another, they have worn something from Carroll & Co.” Frank Sinatra sent a note about a Carroll & Co. suit. “It swings,” Sinatra enthused. Paul Newman quipped that his new clothes “fit terrific, however I did not receive the garter belt.” Walter Matthau wondered jokingly “how many sweaters can I get for the Oscar” he had just won for best supporting actor in 1967.
On the political front, Dwight D. Eisenhower wrote thanking Richard Carroll for a shirt he planned to wear to Baja. Jimmy Carter wore a Carroll & Co. tie while delivering one of his State of the Union addresses.
The look, Carroll said, was the result of his father’s countless trips to Europe. “He went to Scotland. He went to England. He traveled to Italy, and this was in the 1950s, and that was not an easy trip back then,” Carroll said. “If you wanted to find material, if you wanted to find knitters, the quality people, they didn’t have offices in London. You would have to go to them,” he said.
Sadly, in early 2019, Carroll & Co. due to the never ending hikes in rent increases, closed its doors where it all started over 70 years ago in the Golden Triangle on 425 N. Canon Drive and the space would be leased. However and luckily, due to high demand and a loyal following, John Carroll would reopen up a smaller bespoke Men's shop named Carroll Custom now a few spots down from 425 to 427 N. Canon Drive and continues to supply the Well Dressed Gent to this day by appointment.
