    Description

This is a very special doll, sometimes referred to as a Penny Wooden, Dutch Doll, Penny Gretchen, Wooden Top, Plain Jane, Wooden Betty, or Timber Top. Her history is quite interesting (read full description on enclosed informative paper which is photographed above) and makes her quite unique & valuable.
For over 200 years, these traditional peg dolls were handmade by peasant families high up in the Dolomite Mountains. The First World War, though, put an end to making and selling these dolls. However, there remained a large barn full of these dolls collected years before ready for dispatch, so after the war, they were sold to the famous "Pollock's Toy Museum" in London, who in turn sold them to the "Williamsburg Paper Parlor."
It is difficult to say the exact age of this Penny Wooden doll, but it was stored since 1914 and may, indeed, be a number of years older.
This one is in GREAT condition AND is clad in a pretty red calico cotton dress (created by one of the country ladies living just outside Williamsburg.)
Included is the descriptive paper and the original box from The Williamsburg Paper Parlor in which this doll was mailed to her new owner. Stamps totaling .44 are still attached, but unfortunately, I can't discern a postal date.
I apologize that some of the photos are blurred --- my hands shake.
